Grady Hospital is one of Atlanta, Georgia's major hospitals. Located in the heart of downtown, it was targeted for a four phase building improvement. Architects URS of Atlanta were commissioned to design the new extensions and upgrade the old hospital.

Building phases 3 and 4 incorporated exterior and interior aluminium cladding panels with a sun burst or flame relief. Various manufacturing techniques were considered, with the top contenders being flat aluminium sheet with the pattern cut from another sheet and applied by welding and of course superplastic forming. Being concerned about uniformity, panel flatness and overall painted appearance, URS recommended SPF as the first choice.

The panels ranged in size from 1m x 1m to 2m x 1.1m, and were all formed in 3mm thick SPF 5083 alloy. There are a total of almost 300 panels comprising of seven different designs and sizes.

The panels were formed in our Riverside, California factory, and after trimmng and cleaning were sent to the Miller-Clapperton Company of Atlanta for detail assembly and painting. A medium green, semi gloss Kynar finish was applied.

The Grady Hospital site improvement now stands as a premier downtown landmark. Superforms's unique capability once again allowed the architect to realize his ambitions without compromise.
